Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Ch. Anil Kumar said that what Shri Rahul Gandhi has been demanding for the past many months that the Central Government should provide free Covid-19 vaccination to every citizen in the country had to be finally accepted by the Central Government when Prime Minister Modi announced that Centre would provide vaccines to the States for free vaccination across the country.
Addressing a press conference at the DPCC office, Rajiv Bhawan here today, Ch. Anil Kumar said that Shri Rahul Gandhi had announced on 13 January, 2021 that if the Central Government did not provide free vaccination to people, Congress will take the lead to do that. He said that the Prime Minister had to eventually accede to Rahul Ji’s suggestion, after paying no heed to it all these months, as resentment had been building up among people at the Modi Government’s bid to help the private hospital cartel and the vaccine producers to make huge profits from the vaccine distribution.
He said that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind also followed the Modi example to favour the private players. He said that the Delhi Government closed down its own vaccination centres citing vaccine shortage, and then CM Arvind and Deputy CM Manish Sisodia began patronizing private drive-through vaccination centres and in private hospitals, to help them make huge profits. Ch. Anil Kumar said that how could CM Arvind fulfil his promise of providing free vaccination to Delhiites at schools where they cast their votes, as presently many schools are locations for free ration delivery, and wondered whether the ration supply will be stopped to start free vaccination in these schools. Others present at the press conference were Leader of the Congress in the South Delhi Municipal Corporation Shri Abhishek Dutt, ex-MLA and DPCC vice-president Shri Jaikishan, DPCC vice-president Shri Ali Mehndi.
Ch. Anil Kumar said that Congress workers and leaders had been arrested and cases filed against them for protesting outside private vaccination centres across Delhi yesterday, including at the Akshardam centre, adding that Congress workers would not be cowed down by such pressure tactics (though police apply a different yardstick when BJP leaders hold protests). He said that the Arvind Government would resume free vaccination after PM Modi’s announcement that Centre would supply the vaccines free, but there is uncertainty about how it would be done. Ch. Anil Kumar demanded that the Delhi Government refund all those who took Covid-19 vaccines at private hospitals and drive-through vaccination centres, as these centres charged rates ranging from Rs 1400 to Rs 2000.
Ch. Anil Kumar said that had the Arvind Government given heed to the Delhi Congress suggestion that every family should be given free ration and Rs 10,000 per month under the Nyay Yojna till the pandemic was brought under control, which would be possible only through universal vaccination, there would not have been any problem giving relief to the people. He wondered how the Lt. Governor, who stopped the door-step delivery of ration, okayed the Aam Aadmi Party Government’s suggestion to provide home delivery of liquor, and opening of liquor shops when the lockdown was lifted yesterday.
Ch. Anil Kumar said that hundreds of Corona Warriors have succumbed to the deadly virus while on Covid duty, and the Arvind Government has given compensation to the families of only around 15 Corona Warriors. He demanded that the Arvind Government pay Rs 1 crore compensation to the families of all the dead Corona Warriors, as had been promised by the CM. He said that people have undergone tremendous suffering since March, 2020 when Corona cases started gripping the Capital, and the Delhi Government had failed them miserably with inaction and incompetence. He said that since then, Congress leaders, including Rahul Ji, have been on the forefront of helping people while the Arvind Government was mixing politics in the vaccination drive, as people’s welfare seemed to be least of its concerns.
Ch. Anil Kumar said that had the vaccination drive begun in Delhi well on time, many lives could have been saved. He said that CM Arvind first said that people were reluctant to take vaccination, then shut down the Government vaccination centres citing vaccine shortage, though private hospitals and private players had enough stocks to give the vaccine shots at a higher price.
Ch. Anil Kumar said that Congress president Smt. Sonia Gandhi, Shri Rahul Gandhi and Delhi Congress have been speaking up for the common people when they faced oxygen shortage, shortage of hospital beds, ICU beds, ventilators, medicines etc, but the Arvind Government and the Lt. Governor, instead of appreciating the good works of the Congress, filed cases against Congress leaders and workers. He said that the BJP and AAP Governments were in collusion to harass and suppress the voice of the Congress leaders when they highlighted people’s issues and problems. He said that when Congress was fighting for the rights of the people, BJP was preparing for the Assembly elections.
Leader of the Congress party in the South Delhi Municipal Corporation Shri Abhishek Dutt demanded that the Arvind Government honour its promise of giving Rs 1 crore compensation to all the Corona Warriors, who died on Covid duty, within one month, as several lives, including that of MCD sanitation and health workers, had been lost in the past few months to the Corona virus, but the Chief Minister backtracked from his promise, and has been misleading the people with lies and falsehood.
Ex-MLA Shri Jaikishan said that Delhi CM Arvind was taking one-sided decisions to make a mockery of democracy, and if Delhiites are suffering for want of Covid vaccines and medicines, hospital beds and oxygen, jobs and livelihoods, it was due to the indifference and incompetence of the Arvind Government whose actions lack a sense of purpose and clarity. He said that the Arvind Government was in league with the BJP to harass and suppress the voice of the Congress workers as false cases were filed against them for speaking up for the poor people.
Congress vice-president Shri Ali Mehndi said that CM Arvind has problem getting the Lt. Governor’s approval for door-step delivery of ration, but has no problem getting the LG’s sanction for home delivery of liquor, and opening of liquor shops, to help the liquor mafia. He said that the Lt. Governor and CM Arvind play low level politics when it comes to door-step delivery of ration, and objections are raised whenever issues of welfare of the poor and the common people are brought up. He demanded that the Arvind Government immediately approve the 54 lakh applications for new ration cards pending for the past seven years, as the poor have been trampled upon by both BJP and AAP Governments when they are in a state of total helplessness, and want necessities like ration and other essentials urgently.
