We wanted to hold the protest at the demolition site, but the police put up barricades to prevent the Congress workers from reaching there—so Congress workers chanted Hanuman Chalisa in front of the Gauri Shankar Mandir a few metres away. Delhi Congress seeks time to meet the Lt. Governor on Monday to take up the Hanuman Mandir issue —Ch. Anil Kumar
A large number of Congress workers, under the leadership of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Ch. Anil Kumar, today assembled before the Gauri Shankar Mandir and chanted Hanuman Chalisa as a novel protest against the demolition of the decades-old Hanuman Mandir in Chandni Chowk, which was a historic landmark, and a place of worship, for people from different religious faiths. Ch.
Anil Kumar later told the media that the Congress wanted to hold the protest dharna at the site of the demolished Hanuman Mandir, but the Delhi police put up barricades there to prevent them from doing so. Hence, he said, the Congress leaders and workers moved to the Gauri Shankar Mandir, a few metres away from the demolished temple, to hold the protest, as they did not want to break the law.
Prominent among those who participated in the protest, besides a large number of Sants and priests, were DPCC President Ch. Anil Kumar, vice president Mudit Agarwal, Ex MLA Amrish Gautam, DPMC president Amrita Dhawan, DCC presidents Mohd. Usman and Hari Kishan Jindal, MC Prerna Singh, Vijay Mohan, Rahul Sharma, Raj Kumar Indoria and Pradeep Gupta.
Ch. Anil Kumar said that a Congress delegation, under his leadership, has sought an appointment to meet the Lt. Governor on Monday, to take up the Hanuman Mandir demolition issue, and would seek the reconstruction of the temple at the same place,
Ch. Anil Kumar said that the Hanuman Mandir was demolished, and a couple of banyan trees were uprooted, in an overnight operation by the BJP-ruled North Delhi Municipal Corporation, after getting the go-ahead from the Arvind Government in Delhi, who both termed the temple as an “encroachment” on the pavement, and was allegedly obstructing the re-development of Chandni Chowk. He pointed out that the Arvind Government did not file an application to get relief, even after repeated directions by the Supreme Court and the High Court.
Ch. Anil Kumar said that redevelopment did not mean the demolition of temples and other religious institutions with which the people have emotional and religious bondings. He stressed that the temple could have been saved, had the BJP and Arvind Governments showed consideration to the sentiments of not only the people of Old Delhi but also from across the country, as lakhs of people visit the area every day.
Ch Anil Kumar said that both the BJP and Chief Minister Arvind, who wear their faiths on their sleeves to mislead the people, are fake ‘custodians’ of the Hindu faith, as they take out their religious cards only to get the people’s votes during election time. He said that their true, demonic faces are unmasked when they indulge in procedure shenanigans to hurt the sentiments of the people, to serve their political interest.
Ch. Anil Kumar said that the Congress will sustain its protest till the temple is reconstructed, and the Mayor of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation answers why the popular Hanuman Mandir was demolished in an overnight operation. He said that the tradition has been that if a temple has to be removed/shifted, then appropriate measures should be taken to preserve it or relocate it by observing proper religious rites.
