India is set to witness a new phase in robotic-assisted surgery with Intuitive introducing its next-generation da Vinci 5 surgical system in the country. The new multiport robotic platform is designed to provide surgeons with enhanced surgical awareness, advanced visualisation, integrated workflow capabilities and connected learning tools.


The da Vinci 5 builds on the functional design of the da Vinci Xi system and incorporates more than 150 new features, marking the latest addition to Intuitive’s da Vinci portfolio in India. According to the company, more than 200,000 surgical procedures have already been performed in India using da Vinci systems.


Force Feedback to Enhance Surgical Awareness
One of the key features of the new platform is its force feedback technology, which is designed to give surgeons a better sense of the forces being applied to tissue during a procedure. The system also offers what the company describes as its most realistic 3D da Vinci vision system, providing an immersive experience at the surgeon console.


The new platform also integrates surgical instruments and workflow functions to provide surgeons and care teams with greater control and operational efficiency. A universal user interface and dynamic assistance capabilities are designed to help organise workflows and automate selected tasks.


Advanced Computing and Data-Driven Insights
The da Vinci 5 incorporates new sensors, software and advanced processors to create an intelligent surgical platform. The company says these technologies can provide surgeons with more useful data to understand their surgical performance and identify opportunities for improvement.


Rohit Mahajan, Vice President and General Manager, India, Intuitive, said the introduction of da Vinci 5 represents an important development for robotic-assisted surgery in India. He said the focus was increasingly moving beyond technology adoption towards innovations that could support surgical improvement, patient outcomes and stronger healthcare delivery.


According to the company, Intuitive is also working with hospitals, surgeons and healthcare teams to build the training, clinical evidence and support infrastructure required for the responsible and sustainable use of robotic-assisted surgery in India.


Approved Across Multiple Surgical Specialties
The da Vinci 5 has received approval in India for use in a range of surgical procedures, including urologic, gynaecologic, general, cardiac and thoracoscopic surgery, according to the company.


Globally, more than 15,000 surgeons have used da Vinci systems, while the company cites more than 50,000 peer-reviewed publications related to Intuitive technologies. In India, the company says there are more than 2,000 trained robotic-assisted surgeons and over 275 da Vinci robotic-assisted surgical systems installed across major private and government hospitals.


The launch of da Vinci 5 marks another step in the expansion of robotic-assisted surgery in India, with the company emphasising technology, surgeon training, clinical evidence and healthcare infrastructure as key components of the evolving robotic surgery ecosystem.
