Delhi State Cancer Institute successfully organised the Cancer Awareness, Prevention and Screening (CAPS) programme from 25–27 July 2026 at Hall No. 9 Stall No. 56 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi.

The initiative aimed to promote cancer awareness, encourage early detection and improve access to preventive healthcare services. The programme offered free screening for oral, breast, cervical and prostate cancer along with awareness sessions, expert consultations, breast self-examination demonstrations and HPV-related counselling.

A major highlight of the event was the free HPV vaccination drive for girls aged 09–15 years. Around 200 vaccine doses were made available on a first-come first-served basis to help protect adolescent girls against HPV infection, one of the leading causes of cervical cancer. The programme also included HPV-DNA self-testing awareness to promote timely diagnosis and prevention.

The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from visitors, reflecting the growing awareness about the importance of cancer prevention and early screening.

Dr. Savita Arora, Director, Delhi State Cancer Institute, said on the occasion that
“Cancer is one of the few diseases where prevention and early detection can dramatically improve outcomes. Through initiatives like CAPS, we are committed to bringing quality preventive healthcare closer to the community. Our goal is to empower citizens with knowledge, encourage timely screening, and reduce the burden of cancer in society.”

Dr. Pragya Shukla, Head of Department, Clinical Oncology, Delhi State Cancer Institute, said that
“Screening helps detect cancer at an early stage when treatment is most effective. Equally important is vaccination against HPV, which offers a powerful opportunity to prevent cervical cancer before it develops. We encourage eligible individuals to participate in screening and vaccination programmes and adopt healthy lifestyle practices for long-term cancer prevention.”

Mrs. Bharti whose 13-year-old daughter received the HPV vaccine at the event,happily said that
“As a parent, I believe prevention is the greatest gift we can give our children. I am grateful to Delhi State Cancer Institute for providing this free vaccination and for educating families about cervical cancer prevention. The process was smooth, the doctors patiently answered all our questions and I feel reassured that my daughter is now better protected for the future.”

Delhi State Cancer Institute reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening public awareness and expanding access to preventive oncology services through community outreach programmes and evidence-based cancer control initiatives.

Doctors from the Departments of Clinical Oncology, Preventive Oncology and Surgical Oncology at DSCI including Dr. Akanksha and Dr. Priyanka Sharma, along with Nursing Officers and other support staff also participated in the camp.
