The current monsoon season has once again highlighted India’s growing weather imbalance. While states such as Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Assam, Bihar, and parts of Maharashtra are witnessing heavy rainfall, flash floods, and landslides, Delhi and adjoining regions continue to experience prolonged dry spells and unusually high temperatures. This uneven distribution of rainfall has disrupted normal life, damaged infrastructure and crops in flood-hit areas, and intensified water shortages in regions waiting for the monsoon. Such contrasting weather patterns are becoming more frequent, posing serious challenges to disaster management and economic planning.
Several factors contribute to the rising heat and erratic rainfall. Climate change has increased global temperatures, leading to more intense heatwaves and unpredictable monsoon behaviour. Urbanisation, shrinking green cover, excessive concretisation, and air pollution have created “urban heat islands,” especially in cities like Delhi, where temperatures remain significantly higher than surrounding rural areas. Weak or delayed monsoon winds, changing wind patterns, and large-scale climate phenomena further influence the uneven arrival and distribution of rainfall across the country.
The growing contrast between floods in some states and drought-like conditions in others is a reminder that climate resilience must become a national priority. Governments need to strengthen flood-control systems, improve urban drainage, promote rainwater harvesting, expand green spaces, and invest in scientific weather forecasting. Citizens also have a role in conserving water and protecting the environment. India’s future prosperity will depend not only on economic growth but also on its ability to adapt to an increasingly unpredictable climate.
