Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Ch. Anil Kumar said that it was commendable that the Supreme Court has noted that the nomination of Aldermen to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) was in the domain of the democratically elected Government, and not that of the Lt. Governor, as otherwise it can “effectively destabilize the democratically-elected Municipal committee”, as the Alderment have “voting power also”, but the Aam Aadmi Party, despite having a clear mandate in the MCD, was rushing to the court for anything and everything to stall the functioning of the Corporation, as the AAP ruled MCD has not done any substantive work in the past six months, after being elected to the Corporation.
Ch. Anil Kumar said that Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who is also the national convenor of the AAP, had promised many things before the MCD elections, including a smoothing interaction between the Delhi Government and the MCD, but instead of streamlining the functioning of the Corporation for the welfare of the people, the MCD has been giving priority to anti-people actions, like hiking the house tax, and reducing the tax rebate, which would only compound the financial distress of the common people, already stressed out due to price rise and unemployment.
Ch. Anil Kumar said that when Congress was in power in Delhi, it nominated Aldermen to the MCD, without locking horns with the Lt. Governor, and did not go to court to stall the functioning of the MCD. He said that though the Congress Government had limited Budget allocation compared to the Kejriwal Government, it never starved the MCD of funds, which disturbed the smooth functioning of the Municipal Corporation. He said that the Kejriwal Government indulged in petty politics on every issue, including allocation of funds to the MCD, to destabilize the functioning of the Corporation, including disbursement of salaries to the sanitation workers, teachers, nurses, doctors and and various other categories of MCD employees.
Ch. Anil Kumar said that now that the court has vested all the powers to the elected Government both in Delhi and in the Corporation for good governance, Kejriwal should implement his election promises without any further delay or trotting out excuses, as his priority should be in eliminating air and water pollution, clearing piled up garbage and garbage mountains, repairing and re-carpeting of roads, desilting of drains, and improving the infrastructure and facilities at MCD schools and hospitals for the larger interest of the common people.
