Synopsis:
Addressing a press conference at the DPCC office, Rajiv Bhawan here today, Smt. Krishna Tirath said that when the present lockdown was announced on May 19, 2021 with the latest wave of the Covid-19 pandemic making the national Capital  a killing field, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind had announced that it will be a short  lockdown, but he kept on revising his plans, and now, after the lockdown stretching to the fifth week, CM Arvind has not yet made up his mind to unlock the Capital in full, and thinks of taking “expert opinion” before considering lifting of the lockdown in a “phased manner”.

Former Union Minister and ex-MP Smt. Krishna Tirath said that the prolonged lockdown has caused irreparable damage to the economy and lives of the people of Delhi, as the national Capital has virtually hit the bottom in every index, with small businesses, traders and shopkeepers, and those who depend on them for their livelihood, suffering a terrible battering. She repeated the Delhi Congress’ demand that a monthly financial relief of Rs 10,000 should be given to every family in the Capital and a special package be given to small shopkeepers, as the deadly sweep of the mutated strain of the Corona virus, has not spared none.

She said that it was surprising that the Delhi Government plans to allow resumption of construction and industrial activity, without specifying what steps are being taken to ensure that the workers engaged in the construction and industrial activities  are protected from the sweep of the virus, and how these sectors would function with the raw material shops shut? Smt. Krishna Tirath also wondered why construction activity on the Central Vista project at India Gate was allowed to continue, when the entire Capital was under a lockdown?

Smt Krishna Tirath said that people have suffered enough due to the prolonged lockdown with all economic activity coming to a grinding halt. She said that Delhi Congress favours lifting of the lockdown, and the Government should focus on putting restrictions on containment zones, instead of keeping the entire Delhi shut, so that economic activity can be resumed, and people can earn their livelihood.

Smt. Krishna Tirath said that to add to the misery of the people, the black fungus (mucormycosis) is also spreading fast, with 773 cases reported so far, and the medicine for its treatment Amphotericin B injection vials in short supply. She said that it was shocking to learn that the Delhi Government has put  a gag order on the media from publishing about the infection “without any prior permission from the Department of Health and Family Welfare, Government of NCT of Delhi”. She said that to cover up the failures of the Arvind Government, the media is being muzzled, but the people of Delhi have a right to know how this virus is spreading, lest they would be put to greater risk, which would be as deadly as the Corona virus spread.
