Synopsis:
Mumbai has started vaccination on pregnant and lactating women without registration, and Delhi should do likewise to boost the immunity of such women. She said that with Delhi running short of vaccines, and CM Arvind making no earnest efforts to buy vaccines directly from the Indian/foreign companies on time, it is unlikely that these special categories of women would get their vaccine shots any time soon, as there is a severe vaccine crunch now, to put  people in the lurch -Ms Amrita Dhawan

Delhi Pradesh Mahila Congress President Ms Amrita Dhawan demanded that the Delhi Government immediately establish vaccination centres for pregnant and lactating women, as the Central Government had made changes in the guidelines on May 19 to include these two categories of women for inoculation.

She said that Mumbai has started vaccination on pregnant and lactating women without registration, and Delhi should do likewise to boost the immunity of such women. She said that with Delhi running short of vaccines, and CM Arvind making no earnest efforts to buy vaccines directly from the Indian/foreign companies on time, it is unlikely that these special categories of women would get their vaccine shots any time soon, as there is a severe vaccine crunch now, to put  people in the lurch.

Addressing a digital press conference today, along with Ms Rinku, leader of the Congress party in the East Delhi Municipal Corporation, Ms Amrita Dhawan said that with the next wave of the Covid-19 pandemic likely to hit children hard, the Delhi Government should set up N-ICU, Covid Care Centre, and proper arrangements in the paediatric wards of hospitals.

Ms Rinku alleged that the Arvind Government did not make use of the MCD hospitals to treat Covid patients, despite people struggling to get beds with ventilator facilities. She said that the Congress party had suggested a united fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, but the Arvind Government and the BJP, ruling the MCDs chose to indulge in public spats to score political points, detrimental to the interest of the people, severely impacted by the latest Covid surge. She said that the MCD hospitals have around 3797 beds, and following Delhi Congress’ persistent demand, 400-500 beds were reserved in MCD hospitals for  Covid patients, but these were mostly ordinary beds without oxygen facility.

Ms Rinku added that it was shocking to understand that moves were afoot to shut down the MCD hospitals. She said that the South Delhi Municipal Corporation had created 60 and 25: beds in its hospitals at Tilak Nagar and Kalkaji, respectively, but these beds have not been utilised to treat Covid patients. Similarly, she added, no Covid patient has been treated at the 100-bed Balakram hospital in North Delhi. She alleged that the MCDs did not carry out any sanitation drive, nor arranged enough woods at the cremation grounds, to confound the woes of the people.

Ms Rinku said that the Arvind Government and the BJP did not even pay the salaries of the Covid Warriors, nor did the Delhi Government honour its promise of giving Rs 1 crore compensation to the families of the Corona Warriors who died on duty.
