Synopsis:
Ch. Anil Kumar’s first challenging task was to organize raw rations and cooked meals, essential items and utensils, to the poor of Delhi, who were caught unawares by the sudden lockdown, which pushed them to the edge of poverty, with no help coming from the BJP and Aam Aadmi Party Governments. With no public or private transport allowed to ply, it was a mammoth task to establish nearly 200 “Congress Ki Rasois” across Delhi, which ran for several months, even when the lockdown was lifted in Delhi, and fed over 75 lakh people, at the rate of over 50,000 people per day.

Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Ch. Anil Kumar completed one year in office today as the head of the Delhi Congress, which was a year of “Seva Aur Sangarsh Ka Ek Saal” (service to the people, surmounting unforeseen struggles and challenges) in the last one year, as six days after he assumed charge, a national lockdown was declared by the Prime Minister due to the quick spread of the Covid-19 pandemic across the country.

A major achievement of Delhi Congress under Ch. Anil Kumar was the victory of Congress candidate Zubair Ahamad from Chauhan Banger in East Delhi, in the by-elections to the 5 MCD wards. The Congress also increased its vote share in the process.

Ch. Anil Kumar, braving risks to his own health, visited all the Congress Ki Rasois to ensure smooth distribution of cooked nutrious food to all those who depended on such community kitchens for their survival. The Delhi Congress also supplied 4.5 lakh units of raw ration to Delhiites, besides arranging transport and accommodation to the migrant workers, who were leaving the Capital in droves to their native villages, due to loss of jobs and livelihood. It was yet again a challenging task, as the Delhi Congress had to overcome many hurdles—over a dozen FIRs were filed against Ch. Anil Kumar and other Congress leaders in their determined struggles to reach out to the poor and the helpless—to serve them. The Congress party, despite being out of power, worked with total dedication to serve the people when they needed such services the most, as the ruling BJP and Aam Aadmi Party leaders and Governments preferred to stay quiet and ‘safe’.

It was due to Ch. Anil Kumar’s repeated requests to increase the RT-PCR Covid tests to determine the exact spread of the pandemic in the Capital that the AAP Government started holding more and more of these Gold Standard tests. Delhi Congress also extended financial support to a journalist’s family, who died of Covid, and migrant workers, and fought relentlessly to include the sanitation workers in the ambit of the Rs 1 crore compensation scheme, announced by the Delhi Government for the Covid Warriors, who died on Covid duty.

When Delhi hospitals were overflowing with Covid patients, and dead bodies, Ch. Anil Kumar visited the three big hospitals under construction at Ambedkar Nagar, Burari and Dwarka (Congress Government, headed by the late Smt. Sheila Dikshit, started the construction work of these hospitals) and requested the Delhi Chief Minister to get these hospitals at least partially ready, so that some of the heavy loads of other Government hospitals, could be transferred to these hospitals.

In the past 12 months, the vigilante Delhi Congress workers, under Ch. Anil Kumar, took to streets to raise the people’s voice, whether it was the sudden and unplanned Covid lockdown, the re-opening of the liquor vends flouting all Covid-19 pandemic norms and guidelines, opening of a new liquor vend near the Akshardam Temple, and the anti-farmer, and anti-Delhi National Capital Territory of Delhi  (Amendment) Bill 2020-21, and many other issues.

Congress has a long tradition of selflessly serving the people, and Delhi Congress will continue its “Seva and Sangarsh” to help the people, though the party presently does not have any MP or MLA from Delhi, which shows that Congress can deliver effective service to the people, even without the backing of power.
