Synopsis:
After the latest price hike of cooking gas, a 14.2 kilogram domestic LPG cylinder will cost Rs 819 in Delhi, up from Rs 794. Similarly, the price of a 19-kilogram commercial LPG cylinder has been hiked by Rs 95 to Rs 1,614 per cylinder. The last LPG price hike came less than a week ago when it was increased by Rs 25 last Thursday. In February, the price of domestic LPG was hiked by Rs 100 in a total of three revisions. It was first increased on February 4 by Rs 25, then by Rs 50 on February 14 and on February 25 by Rs 25. While petrol was sold at Rs 91.17 per litre in Delhi, the cost of diesel stood at Rs 81.47 on March 1, Monday.

At the direction of Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Ch. Anil Kumar, a large number of Congress workers, including Mahila Congress, held a demonstration outside the BJP headquarters on Rouse Avenue, to protest against the soaring oil prices, with the Modi  Government at the Centre and the Arvind Government in Delhi taking no step to effect a tax cut, as a major part of the petrol, diesel and cooking gas prices goes into Excise Duty, collected by the Central Government and VAT (Value Added Tax), imposed by the Delhi Government. The women Congress workers carried cooking gas cylinders, as the steep rise in the cooking gas price has terribly upset household budgets, already severely impacted by the Covid pandemic, job loss and loss of livelihood.

The Congress workers assembled at the DPCC office, Rajiv Bhawan, before marching towards the BJP office, to gherao it, to protest against the constant oil price hikes under the Modi Government.

The Congress workers shouted slogans such as “Modi Sarkar Ka Ye Khel, Mehengi Gas, Mehanga Tel”, “Baajpa Ka Sarkar Jab Se Aayi Hai, Mehengai Lai Hai” etc. as the oil companies raised the prices without any checks and balances.

The Congress workers questioned the silence of the BJP and Aam Aadmi Party leaders who used to protest even when a minor hike in oil prices was effected, when Congress was in power, both at the Centre and in Delhi, though crude oil prices in the international markets were the highest. But under the Modi Government, oil prices have been witnessing an upward trajectory even when crude oil prices at the international market were at the lowest.

Prominent among those who participated in the demonstration were vice presidents Jai Kishan, Ali Mehndi, Mudit Agarwal and Shivani Chopra, DPMC president Amrita Dhawan, ex-MLAs Ch. Mateen Ahmed, Hari Shankar Gupta, Rajesh Lilothia, Amrish Singh Gautam, Vijay Singh Lochav, Veer Singh Dhingan, Kunwar Karan Singh, DCC presidents Hari Kishan Jindal, Dinesh Kumar Advocate, Gurcharan Singh Raju, Mohd. Usman, Vishnu Aggarwal, Rajesh Chauhan and Kailash Jain, Parvez Alam, Advocate Sunil Kumar, Kamalkant Sharma, DP Maurya, Ex MC Pushpa Singh and Mahila Congress, Sewa Dal, DPYC workers, NSUI and Cells and Department workers.
