Synopsis:
The people of Delhi have been left to the mercy of God by both the Modi Government at the Centre and the Arvind Government in Delhi, as they have become victims of the inaction and incompetence of these Governments. •Ramp up Covid testing in Delhi to 2 lakh per day to check the virtual community spread of the Covid-19 pandemic—Ch. Anil Kumar

Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president Ch. Anil Kumar expressed his fear that the Covid-19 pandemic has either made a community spread in Delhi or on the verge of earning that dubious distinction, as Delhi Chief Minister Arvind has woefully failed in checking the spread of the virus. He said that there was “zero fight” by the Delhi Government against the Covid-19 pandemic.

Addressing a press conference at the DPCC office, Rajiv Bhawan here today, Ch. Anil Kumar said that Delhi Congress and Congress leader Shri Rahul Gandhi have been demanding for the past three months that unless testing is ramped up to one lakh per day, which should be mostly RT-PCR, it would be very difficult for the Government to make a correct assessment of the surge of Covid cases, and that is what has happened now, with the Arvind Government caught in a state of total helplessness.

He said that the people of Delhi have been left to the mercy of God by the Modi Government at the Centre and the Arvind Government in Delhi, as they have become victims of the incompetence of both these Governments. He said that it was shocking that the Arvind Government was trying to give a communal twist to the Covid spread, instead of tackling the issue at a war-footing, by taking every section of people along.

Ch. Anil Kumar said that the Arvind Government was not only hiding the exact number of Covid cases but also Covid deaths, as the number of Covid dead bodies reaching the crematoriums and burial grounds of Delhi are much more than what the Government data says, i.e 125 to 130 bodies per day for the past four days. He said that one Covid death was happening every ten minutes, and out of the five daily Corona deaths across the country, one is in Delhi. He said that Delhi was recording 80 per cent less tests than required, and people are paying a heavy price for such laxity.

Ch. Anil Kumar said that he had suggested at an all-party meeting with CM Arvind recently that the urgent need was to increase testing to 2 lakh per day to identify the virus-affected and assess the spread of the pandemic so that the Government can take effective steps to stem the Corona tide.

He pointed out Niti Ayog’s warning that by December, Delhi will have 15,000 Corona cases per day, which will be beyond the capability of the Arvind Government to tackle, as the Capital lacks the infrastructure and medical staff in Government hospitals to take in such a load as most people are not in a position to bear the high cost of treatment in private hospitals. He charged the Arvind Government of squandering public money for personal publicity as the Government’s fight against Corona seemed to have confined only on paper, literally.

Ch. Anil Kumar said that the Chief Minister Arvind and his Health Minister Satyender Jain have been speaking in different tongues, contradicting each other, and both were equally guilty of failing to control the fast spread of the Coronavirus in the Capital. Ch. Anil Kumar demanded the resignation of Health Minister Jain for his utter failure to take prompt measures to check the Corona spread, while CM Arvind was ensconced in his house in the first three months of the Corona pandemic crisis, adding that Delhi had never before seen such a “coward” Chief Minister. “What benefit the people of Delhi got from Arvind’s media advertisements?”, wondered Ch. Anil Kumar. He also wondered what happened to “Operation Shield”, launched on 9 April, 2020 and the Japanese sanitizer machines, which were imported at high cost with much fanfare, but these machines do not seem to have been used to sanitize the hot spots in the Capital.

Ch. Anil Kumar also questioned the use of Arvind’s pet project, Mohalla Clinics, at the time of the pandemic as most of them have been shut, and were of no use to the people, particularly the poor living in the ‘bastis’, in these crisis times.

Ch. Anil Kumar said that the huge surge in Covid cases across the country and in Delhi proves that both the Modi Government at the Centre and the Arvind Government in Delhi have failed miserably in addressing the Covid pandemic. He said that there was no real co-ordination either between CM Arvind and his Health Minister Satyender Jain or between Arvind and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. He said that he had also suggested at the all-party meeting that locking shopping centres was no answer now when the economy is completely stressed out; instead, containment zones should be marked to address the Corona spike. And free RT-PCR testing should be done across Delhi.
