Synopsis:
The Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi has condemned the dastardly terror attacks in Vienna. The Prime Minister said, “Deeply shocked and saddened by the dastardly terror attacks in Vienna. India stands with Austria during this tragic time. My thoughts are with the victims and their families.”

After France, another European country Austria witnessed a terrorist attack in its capital city Vienna on Monday evening. Reports say that the attack was carried out at six different places claiming at least 4 lives, including two men and two women, injuring around 15 people. The injured people are undergoing treatment in different hospitals and the condition of at least 7 remains critical.

The shooting started near the Stadttempel synagogue in central Vienna on Monday night, which Interior Minister Karl Nehammer said was connected to the Islamic State terror group.

Police said Tuesday that they currently believe the attack was perpetrated by one man, who was shot and killed by officers within nine minutes a little after 8 p.m. local time. But Nehammer noted at a press conference that authorities could not rule there still being other suspects involved, and therefore the city would maintain a high level of security.

Officials say the dead attacker, Kujtim Fejzulai, was a 20-year-old dual citizen of Austria and North Macedonia, and sympathizer of the Islamic State terrorist group with a prior conviction for links to terrorism. Fejzulai had been jailed in April 2019 for trying to join Islamic State but he was granted early release in December under juvenile law because he was under 19-years-old at the time of his offending.

They have searched more than a dozen homes in connection to him and temporarily detained 14 people connected to him.

Nehammer said the attack was an “assault” on Austria’s values and “an utterly inept attempt to weaken or divide our democratic society,” but added: “We will not let this happen.”

The Vienna police are learned to have killed one terrorist involved in the attack. The police, which fears that more than one terrorist was involved in the shootout, has so far arrested at least 4 suspects.

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, however, said, “It is now confirmed that attack was clearly an Islamist terror attack,” adding “It was an attack out of hatred, hatred for our fundamental values, hatred for our way of life, hatred for our democracy in which all people have equal rights and dignity.”
