
Indian Premier League (IPL) is back among major Controversies and will be played in UAE. This decision comes as a result of the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the country. Whereas, the UAE has recorded far fewer cases and subsequent deaths. Therefore, this season like 2014 (which had some matches) will be held in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Sharjah. All eight IPL teams and the organisers are in a ‘bio-bubble’ to minimise the risk of infection. In all, 24 matches will be held in Dubai, 20 in Abu Dhabi and 12 in Sharjah. Venues for the playoffs and the IPL 2020 Final will be announced later. The season was first supposed to be played in March-May 2020 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
One of the major controversy being The backlash against Chinese products forced VIVO, the title sponsor for IPL 2020 to suspend their association for one year. In VIVO’s place, Dream11 will be the title sponsor. There has been some outrage even against Dream11 due to the presence of the Chinese entity Tencent within the organization.
The 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to begin on today, September 19 when the Chennai Super Kings take on defending champions Mumbai Indians at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi and will end on November 10. Unlike most of the previous seasons, IPL 2020 will begin sans an opening ceremony. In 2019, the IPL Governing Council and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had decided to not hold the ceremony in wake of the Pulwama terror attack. Instead, the organisers had decided to donate the fund to families of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel, who lost their lives in the terror attack. “We will not have any inaugural function for the IPL and the money budgeted for that goes to the martyrs’ families,” then Committee of Administrators (CoA) chairman Vinod Rai had said.
Also, the fact that the tournament is happening in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) begin closed doors and without fans amid the novel coronavirus pandemic, is another reason why there will not be an opening ceremony today. This edition of the IPL will also not feature cheerleaders for the same reasons. Organisers, however, are confident that fans would be able to watch the matches from the stadiums at a later stage of the Twenty20 tournament that concludes on November 10.

As the IPL tournament involves each team playing every other team twice in a home-and-away, double round-robin format. At the conclusion of the double round-robin league, based on aggregate points, the top four teams qualify for the playoffs. In this stage, the top two teams compete with each other (in a match titled “Qualifier 1”), as do the remaining two teams (in a match titled “Eliminator”). While the winner of Qualifier 1 directly qualifies for the final match, the losing team gets another chance to qualify for the final match by playing the winning team of the Eliminator match; this match is titled Qualifier 2. The winner of this subsequent Qualifier 2 match moves onto the final match. The team that wins the final match is crowned the Indian Premier League champion.
Altogether, thirteen teams have played in the past ten seasons of the IPL tournament. Of these, five teams are no longer a part of the tournament. In 2011, BCCI terminated the franchise of Kochi Tuskers Kerala for contractual breach. Similarly, BCCI terminated the franchise of Deccan Chargers in 2012 for backing off from its commitments.
In 2013, Pune Warriors India exited IPL after it had a franchise valuation disagreement with BCCI. Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were suspended in 2015 following a betting controversy. However, in July 2017, BCCI announced that both Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals would be allowed back into the IPL competition from the 2018 season. The tournament featured eight teams for the 2019 season, including Delhi Capitals, Kings XI Punjab, Kolkata Knight Riders, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rajasthan Royals, Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mumbai Indians.
Mumbai Indians is the most successful team in league history, having won four titles. Chennai Super Kings, Sunrisers Hyderabad, Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals, apart from former team Deccan Chargers, are the other teams to have won the tournament title as of May 2019.
