The National Crime Records Bureau publishes detailed data on crimes, including crimes against women, in its annual report “Crime in India”. As per National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), the percentage of ever-married women (18–49 years) experiencing spousal violence has declined to 29.3%, compared to 31.2% in NFHS-4 (2015–2016).

The Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act, 2005 provides civil remedies to protect women from domestic violence, including protection, residence, custody, and compensation orders. States and UTs are responsible for law enforcement, including crimes against women, while the Central Government supports through policy and legislative measures. Protection Officers are appointed at the district level to assist victims and courts.

Under the Mission Shakti initiative, integrated services are provided through two verticals—Sambal and Samarthya. One Stop Centres (OSCs) offer medical, legal, shelter, and counselling support, with 926 centres assisting over 13.37 lakh women (as of December 2025). The Women Helpline (181), operational across 35 States/UTs and linked with ERSS-112, has supported over 99.09 lakh women (as of February 2026).

Other initiatives include Nari Adalat for grassroots dispute resolution, and Shakti Sadan—an integrated relief and rehabilitation facility with 416 centres operational. To enhance transparency and accessibility, the Mission Shakti Portal and mobile app provide multilingual access to services and information, including details of over 2,400 Protection Officers nationwide.

These efforts collectively aim to improve safety, protection, and empowerment of women across the country.
