“What You See Is What You Pay” Rule Enforced Nationwide

In a firm administrative move aimed at safeguarding consumer interests, the Central Government has issued a clear and uncompromising directive to hotel and restaurant operators across the country. The government has categorically stated that adding LPG charges, gas surcharges, or any other additional fees arbitrarily to customer bills will now be treated as illegal and an unfair trade practice.

Full Picture of the Directive
The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has released an advisory mandating that the price displayed on the menu must be the final payable amount. All applicable taxes and operational costs must already be included in the listed price.

The authority emphasized that adding any extra charges at the billing stage constitutes a direct violation of consumer rights.

Ban on “Hidden Charges”
The government has taken strict note of practices where customers were being charged additional amounts under labels such as “gas surcharge,” “LPG charges,” or “fuel cost recovery.”
Such hidden charges have now been completely prohibited, ensuring transparent and fair billing practices across the hospitality sector.

Key Directives for Businesses
Menu prices must be treated as final and inclusive
All taxes and operational costs must be pre-included
No additional charges can be levied separately
Any violation will be considered an unfair trade practice

Strict Action for Non-Compliance
The CCPA has warned that any violation of these directives will invite stringent action under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, including penalties and other legal consequences.

Major Relief for Consumers
This move is expected to bring significant relief to consumers who often faced confusion and inconvenience due to hidden charges in their bills. Customers can now expect full transparency and clarity in pricing.

The Central Government’s initiative marks a decisive step toward enhancing transparency and strengthening consumer rights. The hospitality industry has now been given a clear message:

“The price on the menu is the price you pay — no exceptions.”
