New Delhi: In a major push to strengthen healthcare infrastructure in the capital, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has initiated plans to establish a Super Speciality Medical Institute at the Rajan Babu Institute of Pulmonary Medicine and Tuberculosis (RBIPMT) campus in Kingsway Camp.
Project to be Developed Under PPP Model
According to officials, the project will be implemented under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. SBI Capital Markets has been appointed as the transaction advisor to evaluate and design the execution framework.
One of Asia’s Largest TB Hospitals
Spread across 47 acres, RBIPMT is among the largest tuberculosis hospitals in Asia, with a capacity of around 700 beds. Established in 1935, the institute now requires significant infrastructure upgrades to meet modern healthcare standards.
Medical College and PG Courses Planned
MCD has also proposed setting up a medical college within the campus. Key highlights include:
Increase in MBBS seats from 60 to 150
Admission of 50 postgraduate (PG) students annually
Estimated project cost of around ₹380 crore
Clinical Training to Link with Hindu Rao Hospital
Under the proposed model, academic activities will be conducted at RBIPMT, while clinical training will continue at Hindu Rao Hospital. This integration aims to optimize resources and enhance training quality.
Project Still in Initial Stage
Officials confirmed that the project is currently in its preliminary phase. Critical decisions regarding infrastructure, hostel facilities, and medical services are yet to be finalized. Notably, the proposal had faced delays in the past due to financial constraints.
Annual Operational Cost Estimated at ₹96 Crore
The plan includes a provision of approximately ₹96 crore annually for operational and maintenance expenses, ensuring sustainability of the institute.
Conclusion: A Transformational Step
If implemented successfully, the project is expected to revolutionize TB and pulmonary care in Delhi while significantly enhancing medical education and research capacity.
The initiative could mark a major leap in delivering advanced, accessible, and integrated healthcare services in the capital.
