New Delhi: A growing sleep crisis is emerging in India as changing lifestyles, rising stress levels and excessive use of digital devices continue to disrupt sleeping patterns. Health experts warn that millions of Indians are now suffering from sleep disorders, increasing the risk of several serious health complications.
According to medical specialists, conditions such as Insomnia, Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Restless Leg Syndrome are witnessing a sharp rise across the country.
Millions Affected Across India
Recent studies suggest that nearly 68 million people in India may be affected by sleep apnea, while around 30 million individuals are struggling with insomnia.
Experts also estimate that more than 52 million working Indians experience disrupted sleep due to modern lifestyles, shift duties and excessive screen time.
These factors disturb the body’s circadian rhythm (biological body clock), often leading to persistent fatigue, mental stress and declining overall health.
Serious Health Risks Linked to Poor Sleep
Medical experts caution that chronic sleep deprivation is directly associated with several serious diseases, including:
Heart disease
Stroke
Diabetes
Obesity
Depression
Memory impairment
Poor sleep can also weaken the immune system, making the body more vulnerable to infections and long-term illnesses.
Urban Professionals Among the Most Affected
Studies indicate that about 37% of adults show symptoms of insomnia in some form.
People living in urban areas and young professionals working in the IT sector appear to be among the most affected groups, largely due to irregular work schedules and prolonged exposure to digital screens.
Experts Recommend Lifestyle Changes
Doctors advise that individuals should avoid using mobile phones, laptops and other electronic devices at least one hour before bedtime.
Maintaining a regular sleep schedule, engaging in physical exercise and adopting a balanced lifestyle can significantly reduce sleep-related problems.
A Growing Public Health Concern
Health experts warn that if sleep disorders are not addressed in time, they could become a major public health challenge in the coming years.
They emphasize that adequate sleep and a healthy lifestyle are essential for both physical and mental well-being.
