New Delhi: In a significant move aimed at enhancing transparency and reducing political disputes, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi is planning a new system for constituting its crucial Standing Committee, under which half of the members may be selected through a lottery process.


According to sources, the Standing Committee consists of 18 members, and under the proposed arrangement, 9 members would be chosen through a lottery system. The draw would be conducted among councillors selected from different zonal and ward committees, introducing a mechanism designed to make the selection process more transparent and impartial.


Officials believe that the move could minimise political disagreements and allegations of bias that often arise during committee formation.


First Phase: Three Members to Be Retired Through Lottery
As part of the initial phase of the new system, three members out of the six previously elected by the House last year will be selected through a lottery to retire from the committee.
Once these seats are vacated, new members will be chosen to fill the remaining positions, paving the way for the revised committee structure.
