New Delhi: Amid rising tensions in West Asia and growing concerns over disruptions in global energy supplies, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday assured that the Indian government is leaving no stone unturned to minimize the impact of the war on citizens. He also accused the opposition of spreading fear and putting political interests above national priorities.
Addressing the NXT Summit 2026, the Prime Minister said the ongoing geopolitical crisis is affecting countries worldwide, but India has taken timely strategic measures to strengthen its energy security.
Global Crisis: India’s Strategic Response
PM Narendra Modi said the war in West Asia has created significant pressure on global supply chains, affecting the availability and movement of energy resources.
However, he emphasized that the Indian government is actively engaging with global leaders and partner nations to ensure stability in the supply of energy, food, and essential commodities.
According to the Prime Minister, multiple diplomatic and economic channels are being used to safeguard India’s national interests during the crisis.
Energy Security: Major Expansion in Petroleum Reserves
Highlighting India’s preparedness, PM Narendra Modi stated that the country has significantly expanded its strategic petroleum storage capacity since 2014.
Earlier, India’s strategic oil reserve capacity was almost negligible
It has now increased to around 5 million tonnes
India has emerged as one of the world’s major refining hubs
The government believes that this expanded storage capacity will help cushion the country against global energy shocks.
Relief Measures for Eateries
To ease pressure on LPG supply, the government has introduced temporary relief measures for commercial establishments.
Major Steps:
Restaurants and roadside eateries have been allowed limited use of kerosene and coal
The gap between domestic LPG cylinder bookings has been increased to better manage supply
Officials say these measures aim to ensure uninterrupted supply for households while balancing commercial demand.
Parliament Erupts: Rahul Gandhi Targets Government
The energy crisis also triggered a heated debate in Parliament. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi criticized the government over the LPG situation and India’s oil policy, directly targeting Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.
The remarks led to massive uproar in the Lok Sabha, with several opposition members entering the well of the House.
Speaker Om Birla had to intervene to restore order.
Rahul Gandhi also questioned the government about the U.S. waiver allowing India to purchase oil from Russia.
Strict Action Against Black Marketing
PM Narendra Modi directed state governments to take strict action against hoarding and black marketing of essential commodities, ensuring that citizens do not suffer due to the global crisis.
