Four Major Hospitals to be Integrated; ‘Delhi Institute of Medical Sciences’ Proposed in Trans-Yamuna
New Delhi: In a major step aimed at transforming the capital’s healthcare landscape, the Delhi Government is considering an ambitious plan to establish a world-class, AIIMS-like mega medical hub in the Trans-Yamuna region. The initiative is being seen as a landmark move to elevate Delhi into a global centre of medical excellence.
Under the proposed plan, four major government healthcare institutions — Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital (GTB), Delhi State Cancer Institute (DSCI), Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital (RGSSH) and the Institute of Human Behaviour & Allied Sciences (IHBAS) — may be integrated to form a single, large and advanced healthcare ecosystem.
The proposed institution could be named the “Delhi Institute of Medical Sciences (DIMS)”, envisioned as a multi-speciality, research-driven and autonomous medical complex on the lines of leading national institutions.
Expansion of World-Class Healthcare Facilities
According to officials, the new medical hub is expected to spread across hundreds of acres and will bring together advanced treatment facilities, cutting-edge research infrastructure, medical education and super-speciality care under one integrated system.
Key proposed features include:
Super-Speciality Medical Centres
Advanced Cancer Treatment & Oncology Research Facilities
National-level Mental Health and Neuroscience Institute
High-end Medical Education & Research Infrastructure
State-of-the-art Diagnostic and Emergency Services
Healthcare experts believe that the proposed institute could function on the lines of premier institutions such as AIIMS and NIMHANS, attracting patients not only from across India but also from neighbouring countries.
GTB Hospital to Serve as the Central Hub
Under the proposal, Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital (GTB) is expected to function as the core institution, while the other three facilities will operate as specialised centres within the integrated healthcare network.
Institutional Roles in the Proposed Structure:
GTB Hospital – Main multi-speciality treatment and emergency care centre
Delhi State Cancer Institute (DSCI) – Dedicated oncology and cancer treatment hub
Rajiv Gandhi Super Speciality Hospital (RGSSH) – Focus on advanced super-speciality services
Institute of Human Behaviour & Allied Sciences (IHBAS) – National-level mental health and neuroscience centre
Relieving Pressure on GTB Hospital
Officials point out that GTB Hospital currently handles an enormous patient load, making the integration plan crucial for better healthcare delivery.
Annual Patient Load:
GTB Hospital: Over 1.4 million OPD patients annually
Around 95,000 hospital admissions each year
Other institutions currently handle comparatively fewer patients:
DSCI: Around 1.27 lakh OPD patients
RGSSH: Around 2.87 lakh OPD patients
The proposed integration will enable better utilisation of infrastructure, medical specialists, hospital beds and diagnostic facilities, significantly improving patient care.
Underground Tunnel for Seamless Connectivity
Another innovative feature under consideration is the construction of an underground tunnel connecting the hospitals.
This tunnel would ensure safe and rapid movement of patients, medical teams and emergency services between the integrated facilities, enhancing the efficiency of the entire medical complex.
Utilisation of 75 Acres at IHBAS
A key component of the project is the optimal use of nearly 75 acres of vacant land within the IHBAS campus.
This land could be utilised to build new super-speciality blocks, advanced research centres, modern medical colleges and cutting-edge healthcare infrastructure.
High-Level Meeting Led by the Chief Minister
Sources said Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta recently held a high-level review meeting with Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh and senior officials of the Health Department to discuss the proposal and its roadmap.
The government is reportedly exploring the possibility of giving the new institute an autonomous governance model, similar to leading national medical institutions.
A New Chapter in Delhi’s Healthcare Sector
If implemented, the Delhi Institute of Medical Sciences could emerge as one of India’s largest and most advanced medical complexes, significantly strengthening healthcare services in East Delhi and the entire National Capital Region.
Experts believe the project has the potential to redefine healthcare delivery in North India, offering world-class treatment, research opportunities and medical education under one integrated system while benefiting millions of patients every year.
