More than 500 locations across Delhi will witness the sacred ritual of Holika Dahan this evening, marking one of the most significant observances in the Sanatan tradition. Religious leaders describe the festival as a powerful symbol of the victory of righteousness over evil and the enduring strength of devotion.


Temples, residential colonies, and community grounds across the Capital have been preparing since morning, with elaborate arrangements for ritual offerings, decorative wood structures, and comprehensive safety measures.


Auspicious Timing for Holika Dahan (Key Highlights)
Shubh Muhurat: 6:20 PM to 8:50 PM
Bonfire only after the conclusion of Bhadra period
Full Moon (Phalguna Purnima) considered highly significant
Religious experts emphasize that the ritual must not be performed during the Bhadra period, as it is traditionally regarded as inauspicious. Devotees are therefore expected to strictly adhere to the prescribed timing.


Mythological Significance: The Story of Prahlad
According to Sanatan scriptures, the demon king Hiranyakashyap, angered by his son Prahlad’s unwavering devotion to Lord Vishnu, conspired with his sister Holika to burn him alive. However, divine grace protected Prahlad, while Holika perished in the flames.


The ritual of Holika Dahan commemorates this event, symbolising the destruction of arrogance and evil and the ultimate triumph of faith and virtue.


Traditional Ritual Process
The ceremony follows a structured and symbolic process:
The ground is purified and sanctified.
Wood and sacred cow-dung cakes are arranged to form the pyre.
Offerings such as vermilion, rice grains, flowers, coconut, and fresh crop (wheat or barley stalks) are placed.
Family members perform circumambulation, tying sacred threads around the pyre.
The fire is lit with Vedic chants and prayers.
Newly harvested grains are roasted in the flames and consumed as blessed offerings.
It is widely believed that roasting wheat or barley in the sacred fire brings health, prosperity, and protection from negative energies.

Delhi Police and civic authorities have deployed personnel across sensitive and high-footfall areas to ensure peaceful celebrations. Fire services remain on alert to prevent any untoward incidents. Crowd management and safety compliance will be closely monitored throughout the evening.
