Chandigarh: Haryana’s political landscape has once again been stirred by a contentious land allotment issue. Allegations surrounding the re-allotment of a plot in Sector-6, Panchkula, have put former Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda at the center of a fresh political debate.
While the opposition has termed the development a “misuse of power,” supporters argue that the decision was purely an administrative procedure carried out within the framework of rules.
What Is the Case About?
The matter dates back to 2005 and concerns the re-allotment of a plot.
The plot was allotted to Associated Journals Limited (AJL).
Allegations suggest that undue benefits were extended to the company in violation of norms.
The plot was later restored by Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA), prompting scrutiny over the decision-making process.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) registered a case in December 2018. A chargesheet was subsequently filed before a Special CBI Court, and in April 2021, the court framed charges in the matter. The case is currently under judicial consideration.
Court Observations
During hearings in the High Court, observations were made regarding the need to review the administrative rationale behind the restoration of the plot. The court examined the basis and circumstances under which key decisions were taken.
Political Reactions Intensify
The opposition has described the episode as an example of “abuse of office” and “political patronage.” On the other hand, the former Chief Minister’s supporters maintain that all procedures were duly followed and claim the controversy is politically motivated.
Political analysts believe the issue could resurface prominently in the run-up to upcoming elections, potentially becoming a flashpoint in the larger debate over transparency and accountability in land allotments.
Why the Case Matters
Raises questions about transparency in government land allocation.
Revives debate on administrative accountability and fairness.
Rekindles memories of past land-related controversies in the state.
Beyond a single plot, the controversy underscores broader concerns regarding governance, decision-making integrity, and political responsibility in Haryana. With legal proceedings underway, attention now shifts to the court’s final verdict and the evolving political strategies around the issue.
