In a development that has sent shockwaves through the police establishment, a serving IPS officer, Shankar Chaudhary, has been booked on serious charges including kidnapping, illegal detention and extortion, dealing a severe blow to the image of the Delhi Police. The FIR has been registered following a complaint by Sanjay Jain, Joint Commissioner of Police, Southern Range, triggering widespread unease within the force.
According to sources, the registration of an FIR against a serving IPS officer on corruption-linked charges is considered extremely rare, underlining the gravity of the allegations. While action in such cases often targets junior officials, this case stands out as accusations have been levelled directly against a senior officer.
Raid Without Warrant, Foreign National Allegedly Picked Up
Investigations have revealed that on November 26, 2023, the accused officer allegedly conducted a raid in Delhi without informing the local police and without any legal warrant. During the operation, a Nigerian national, Harrison, was allegedly picked up from his residence and unlawfully detained for three days at Mizoram House in Delhi.
Extortion Allegation of ₹35 Lakh
The case escalated on November 29, 2023, when Harrison’s wife approached Delhi Police, alleging that personnel linked to the Mizoram Police demanded ₹35 lakh in exchange for her husband’s release.
CCTV Footage Raises Serious Questions
During the probe, CCTV footage reportedly showed the accused IPS officer personally overseeing the removal of a locker and two bags from the victim’s residence. Shockingly, these items were not reflected in any official seizure memo or record, raising serious doubts about procedural integrity.
The FIR further states that no valid documentation was found to justify Harrison’s detention, casting a dark shadow over the legality of the entire operation.
Role of Other Officers Under Scanner
Sources indicate that the involvement of certain Delhi Police personnel has also surfaced during the investigation. Additionally, the role of another senior IPS officer posted in Mizoram is reportedly under scrutiny.
Overall, the case goes far beyond the alleged misconduct of one officer. It raises fundamental questions about transparency, accountability and abuse of power within the police system. As the investigation unfolds, all eyes remain on whether the rule of law will prevail over the uniform, and whether those responsible—regardless of rank—will be held accountable.
