New Delhi, February 7, 2026 – Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee President Shri Devender Yadav demanded that the Lt. Governor of Delhi should hold an inquiry by a retired judge of the Delhi High Court into the death of 25-year-old bike rider Kamal after falling into a pit dug by the Delhi Jal Board in Janakpuri. He said that Delhi Congress feared bias and lack of credibility as a departmental-level officer in the high-level probe committee set up by the Delhi government will not be fair in its probe.
Shri Devender Yadav said that the family of the deceased has alleged that they went round the police stations throughout the night, despite that they did not get any help and the police could not trace the location of the accident 2 kilometers away, which was a well-known spot. He said that there should be an impartial inquiry into the negligence of the police also. After the way Delhi government officer and Minister Parvesh Verma made some illogical statements, the family is afraid that the case of their son’s death will be suppressed. He said that whether the death of the youth was an incidents or not, such increasing incidents in Delhi can be curtailed by taking strict action against officials responsible for such mishaps as the security arrangements around the excavation site were not found to be in accordance to the prescribed standards noted in the preliminary investigation, for which the Delhi Jal Board was fully responsible.
Shri Devender Yadav said that this was not the first case of administrative negligence in the capital city of Delhi due to which a young life was cut short. Earlier too, in July 2024, a youth studying for Civil Services was electrocuted in Patel Nagar, in July 2024, three students died after water entered the basement of a Civil Services Coaching Centre in Rajender Nagar, a mother-son died after falling into the Ghazipur drain and in August 2024, 12-year-old Mudit Kumar was electrocuted in Bindapur. He said that these were some of the examples which show the working style of the previous and current Delhi governments, while in 2024-2025, 89 deaths were reported due to drowning in waterlogged pits and open drains. He said that 53 people died due to fire, 46 died due to house collapse in rain and 3 died due to electrocution in other mishaps due to governance failures.
Shri Devender Yadav said that to hide its failures, the Rekha Gupta government hastily issued helpline number 1916 to lodge complaints about the shortcomings of Delhi Jal Board. He said that the Delhi High Court had already held the concerned department responsible for the accidents due to its negligence and ordered to register an FIR against the officials and pay a compensation of Rs 20 lakh to the victim’s family in a case.
