Delhi is poised to enter a new phase of urban recreation and tourism-led development. The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has finalised plans for a series of world-class leisure and entertainment projects across East and West Delhi, marking a significant shift in the capital’s urban planning narrative.

These ambitious proposals have received approval from Lieutenant Governor V.K. Saxena, clearing the way for on-ground execution. Officials say the initiative aims to transform Delhi from a largely residential metropolis into a vibrant recreation, tourism and family-entertainment hub, while also strengthening economic activity.

‘Delhi Eye’ to Give East Delhi a Global Identity
One of the most eye-catching projects is the proposed ‘Delhi Eye’ at Mayur Vihar in East Delhi, inspired by the iconic London Eye.

Key Highlights of the Delhi Eye Project
Cantilevered observation wheel
360-degree panoramic view of Delhi
Major tourism and family entertainment destination
Food courts, cafés and open public plazas
DDA officials believe the Delhi Eye could emerge as East Delhi’s biggest landmark, putting the region firmly on the international tourism map.

Rohini to Get a Mega Amusement Park
In Rohini Sector-29, DDA plans to develop a large-scale amusement park spread over approximately 25.50 hectares, offering a major recreational outlet for North-West Delhi.
Proposed Features
Theme rides, adventure zones and family attractions
Restaurants and food streets
Dedicated parking facilities for visitors
Direct benefits for local residents and businesses
The project is expected to become the largest entertainment destination in North-West Delhi, significantly boosting weekend tourism and leisure options.

Modern Leisure Club Planned in Vikaspuri
For West Delhi, a state-of-the-art recreational club is planned in Vikaspuri, designed to cater to local community needs.
Facilities on Offer
Sports and fitness infrastructure
Green lawns and walking tracks
Restaurants and cafeteria spaces
Dedicated areas for family and social events
The club is expected to function as a social, sports and wellness hub for nearby residential colonies.

Kirti Nagar Mega Warehouse to Ease Traffic Chaos
Alongside recreation, DDA is also addressing long-standing commercial and traffic issues. In Kirti Nagar, Asia’s largest furniture market, a modern warehouse complex will be developed over 49,457 square metres.
Expected Benefits
Removal of goods stored on roads
Reduction in traffic congestion and encroachments
Organised storage facilities for traders
Strengthening of local logistics systems
Officials say this project will bring long-overdue order to one of Delhi’s busiest commercial zones.
License-Based Development Model
All projects will be developed under a 33-year licence model:
Land ownership will remain with DDA
Private agencies will handle construction, operations and maintenance
DDA will earn steady long-term revenue
This model, officials say, ensures financial sustainability without alienating public land.
Tenders Likely Within Three Months
According to DDA sources:
Tendering process is expected to be completed within three months
Construction work will begin soon after tenders are awarded
Towards a Balanced, Liveable Delhi
DDA maintains that these projects will:
Provide high-quality recreational spaces for families
Boost tourism and employment
Ensure balanced development between East and West Delhi
Add a new dimension to Delhi’s urban lifestyle
Urban planners see this as a decisive step towards moving Delhi away from a concrete-dominated landscape to a people-centric “recreation city” model—a transformation that could redefine how the capital lives, relaxes and welcomes visitors in the years to come.
