Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday launched a sharp attack on the Congress, accusing the party of neglecting Assam’s culture, identity and development during its years in power, and asserting that the Bharatiya Janata Party is now “washing away the sins of previous Congress governments” in the state.
Addressing a large gathering in Guwahati after a roadshow and cultural programme, the Prime Minister said the Congress had treated Assam merely as a political backyard, ignoring its rich heritage and the aspirations of its people. “When we honour Assam’s culture and traditions today, it unsettles those who once ruled without respect for the state’s identity,” Modi said.
Highlighting the performance of the BJP’s “double-engine government” at the Centre and in Assam, Modi said the state has witnessed a transformation marked by improved infrastructure, better connectivity, expanded healthcare facilities and renewed public trust. He said the people of Assam are now experiencing the benefits of development-oriented governance after years of stagnation.
The Prime Minister accused the Congress of pursuing vote-bank politics that weakened social harmony in the state. In contrast, he said, the BJP’s approach has been inclusive, focused on unity, development and long-term stability. “For us, politics is a medium of service, not a pursuit of power,” he asserted.
Modi also praised the people of Assam for preserving their cultural legacy and contributing to national progress. He expressed confidence that Assam would emerge as a growth engine for the Northeast and play a decisive role in India’s overall development trajectory.
The Prime Minister’s remarks come at a politically significant time and are expected to sharpen the national discourse ahead of upcoming electoral contests, reinforcing the BJP’s narrative of development-driven governance versus what it describes as the Congress’s legacy of neglect.
