Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday is set to script a new chapter in the history of Indian Railways by flagging off the country’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train, marking a major leap towards faster, safer and more comfortable long-distance rail travel.

Designed specifically for overnight journeys, the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train combines high-speed performance with world-class passenger amenities. Railway officials said the new trainset will redefine night travel in India, offering a seamless blend of speed, comfort and modern technology—features that until now were largely associated with premium international rail networks.

The sleeper version of Vande Bharat is equipped with ergonomically designed berths, enhanced sound insulation, smart lighting systems, modern washrooms, charging points at every berth and advanced safety mechanisms. Officials noted that special emphasis has been laid on passenger security, ride quality and reduced travel time, making it a transformative option for long-haul routes.

According to government sources, the new train is expected to be deployed on high-density corridors such as Delhi–Mumbai, Delhi–Howrah and Delhi–Bengaluru, offering a viable and comfortable alternative to air and road travel. The initiative is also seen as a step towards easing congestion while promoting sustainable mass transport.

Prime Minister Modi has earlier described the Vande Bharat project as a symbol of “New India’s speed and self-confidence.” With the launch of its sleeper variant, the government has underlined its commitment to modernising Indian Railways while ensuring that global-standard facilities are accessible to the common traveller.

Railway experts believe the introduction of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train will significantly upgrade the image of Indian Railways and strengthen flagship initiatives such as Make in India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat. As more such trains are planned in the coming years, India’s rail network is poised to emerge as one of the most advanced and passenger-friendly systems in the world.
