The New Year 2026 is set to usher in a new beginning for thousands of economically weaker families in the national capital, as the Delhi government announced the allotment of permanent homes to the urban poor. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that eligible beneficiaries will soon receive the keys to their own flats, turning a long-cherished dream into reality.

Addressing the media, the Chief Minister said the government’s vision goes beyond providing shelter. “Our aim is not just to give four walls, but to ensure a dignified, secure and stable life for the poor,” she said.

According to the government, the flats have been constructed under various redevelopment and housing schemes and will be allotted in a phased and transparent manner. Each housing unit will be equipped with essential civic amenities such as electricity, potable water, sewage systems, paved roads and sanitation facilities to ensure hassle-free living for the residents.

Reiterating the government’s commitment to inclusive urban development, CM Gupta said the focus remains on improving the quality of life of families living in slum clusters. “Our policy is clear—‘where there was a slum, there will now be a permanent home’, so that families are not displaced from their livelihoods and social ecosystem,” she stated.

Officials said the housing complexes have been developed in line with modern urban standards. Facilities such as schools, health centres, anganwadis, community halls and green spaces have been integrated into the projects to ensure holistic development of residents across all age groups.

The Chief Minister issued strict instructions to officials to ensure that the allotment process remains time-bound, fair and corruption-free. Any lapse or irregularity will invite stringent action, she warned.

CM Rekha Gupta also credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi as the inspiration behind the initiative. “The Prime Minister’s vision of ‘Housing for All’ is our guiding force. His commitment that every poor family should have its own home motivates us to take such decisive steps,” she said.

Widely seen as a New Year gift for the underprivileged, the decision is expected to transform the lives of thousands of families, offering them not just a house, but a future built on dignity and security.
