Renowned Sanskrit scholar, Jyotishacharya and expert of Ank Shastra, Pandit Gopal Sharma Shastri, passed away at the age of 96. He was the revered father of senior journalist Krishna Dev Pathak. His demise has plunged not only the family but also the fields of journalism, education and Sanatan culture into deep mourning.
According to family sources, Pandit Gopal Sharma Shastri breathed his last peacefully on December 18, 2025. In Sanatan Dharma, his passing is regarded as Devalok Gaman—the soul’s journey to the divine realm. A lifelong scholar of scriptures, his entire existence was rooted in Dharma, Karma and Sanskar, and his final rites were performed strictly in accordance with ancient Vedic and Sanatan traditions.
The final procession commenced from his residence at 10:00 am on Friday, December 19, 2025. Amidst the resonating chants of “Ram Naam Satya Hai,” grieving family members, disciples and prominent members of society paid their last respects. The procession reached Nigam Bodh Ghat, where the last rites were conducted with Vedic mantras, Agni Sanskar, Pind Daan and symbolic surrender at the Divine Feet. Scholars present described the farewell as a true Sanatan Samskar–driven departure, reflecting a life and death both aligned with scriptures.
Pandit Gopal Sharma Shastri was widely respected for his profound command over Sanskrit, astrology and numerology. Throughout his long life, he made invaluable contributions to education, culture and spiritual consciousness. Even after retiring from a Government Sarvodaya Vidyalaya, he remained actively involved with various social, religious and cultural organisations, dedicating himself to the propagation of Sanatan Dharma, Vedic wisdom and Indian traditions.
Known for his simplicity, disciplined lifestyle and exceptional scholarship, he earned immense respect across society. His students and admirers often remembered him as a “moving Gurukul tradition,” whose guidance helped generations of learners imbibe Sanskrit knowledge and Vedic values.
Condolences poured in from across the spectrum. Arun Sharma, Vice President of the National Journalist Association, Delhi State, along with senior journalists, academicians, religious leaders and social organisations, expressed deep sorrow. They termed his demise an irreparable loss to Sanatan Dharma, Sanskrit scholarship and India’s ancient Vedic heritage.
Prayers are being offered for the eternal peace of the departed soul, while strength and solace are wished for the bereaved family, especially senior journalist Krishna Dev Pathak, to endure this profound loss.
Om Shanti.
