Report: Arun Sharma, Wazirpur, New Delhi

In a major crackdown, the Vajeerpur police post under Ashok Vihar police station recovered ₹3.40 crore worth of discontinued ₹1000 and ₹500 currency notes. The cash was being transported in two vehicles, both of which were intercepted. Four individuals have been arrested in connection with the case.

According to sources, police had received a tip-off about a large consignment of old currency being brought to Delhi for illegal exchange. Acting on the input, teams set up a trap and stopped two suspicious vehicles, which led to the recovery of the massive stash of defunct notes.

During interrogation, the accused revealed that the cash had been sent by two individuals from Gurugram. The senders reportedly claimed they would provide ₹20 lakh in new currency in return for the old notes. Police are now working to identify and track down the masterminds operating this illegal exchange racket.

Preliminary investigations also suggest the presence of a widespread underground network involved in exchanging demonetised notes across various parts of Delhi. Police are currently mapping the links connected to the suppliers, carriers and facilitators of this operation.

Officials said this is one of the largest seizures of old currency in recent months. Keeping in view the seriousness of the matter, other concerned agencies have also been alerted for further investigation.
