The Delhi Library Association organized a lecture on the topic “Role of Libraries in Nation Building” in memory of Shri N.K. Goyal, the visionary who shaped the association, at its headquarters auditorium in Naraina Vihar. The program commenced with the lighting of the lamp, followed by the association’s president, Professor K.P. Singh, welcoming all distinguished guests by presenting them with an angavastram (ceremonial shawl), a bouquet of flowers, and a copy of the Shrimad Bhagavad Gita. In his address, Professor Singh emphasized that libraries are the foundation of our lives, where a world of books is always present. He described books as the wealth of our lives, enabling us to build our careers through reading. He further noted that even after the advent of mobile phones, people’s interest in reading books has increased, and there is no substitute for books.
Dr. Sarojini Singhal, daughter of Shri N.K. Goyal, shared an emotional account of her father’s journey with the Delhi Library Association, from laying its foundation stone to constructing its magnificent building. Reflecting on her childhood memories, she recalled how her father was always dedicated to education and lived a frugal life while tirelessly working to advance the association.
The keynote speaker, Professor Swati Pal, Principal of Janki Devi Memorial College, discussed the significance of libraries in India, tracing their history from the establishment of the first library on March 21, 1836, to the present day. She cited notable references to libraries by luminaries such as Swami Vivekananda, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, and Mahatma Gandhi, highlighting the journey from individual development through libraries to nation-building. Prof. Pal emphasized making libraries more accessible, technologically advanced, and innovative. She invited everyone to visit Janki Devi Memorial College, where, with collective efforts, she has implemented innovative practices in the library, presenting it as a model for others to follow.
The chief guest, Professor Ramesh Chandra Gaur, Director and Dean of Administration at the Kalanidhi Division of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, began his address by referencing the structure of the world’s largest ancient library at Nalanda University. He explained that India’s knowledge tradition has evolved from shruti (oral tradition) to smriti (memory), and from manuscripts to libraries. He stressed the need to upgrade libraries with technology and create an environment where the general public can easily access large libraries. Prof. Gaur also analyzed the positive use of artificial intelligence, stating that if AI simplifies literary reviews, it is a welcome development. He further emphasized strengthening e-libraries, using technology to simplify book searches, and training library staff. He extended his best wishes to the Delhi Library Association and assured his continued support.
Dr. Neerja Varshney, another daughter of Shri N.K. Goyal, also paid tribute to her father. Shri S.S. Khanna, a disciple of Shri Goyal, along with other notable individuals, shared their experiences from their student days under Goyal’s guidance. The program concluded with Dr. Janendra Narayan Singh, General Secretary of the Delhi Library Association, expressing gratitude to all attendees. The event was moderated by Ms. Nivedita.
